The Crystal Skull Curse
Learn the wild origin of The Memphis Bass Pro Shop Pyramid and educate others anytime you wear one of these novelty shirts!
Isaac Tigres, co-founder of Hard Rock Cafe and House of Blues, had largely to do with getting The Great Memphis Pyramid off the ground, but in order to do that properly he sought the advice of long-time Hindi Guru Sathya Sai Baba, who urged Tigres to install a quartz crystal skull in the top of the pyramid. This was intended to be an ‘apotropaic’ object, meaning the object held the power to avert or ward off evil influence/energy. In 1991 — the year the Memphis Pyramid opened, construction workers found and removed the box containing the crystal skull. Upon hearing word of this, Tigres responded, “You don’t have any idea what you have done.” This is believed to be the catalyst that set the curse in motion. Though the skull was removed, he claimed there were still several hidden, mystical artifacts that have never been found. Fast forward through years of failure to use the Pyramid as a music venue and sports arena, to 2015 when Tennessee-native outdoor show host Bill Dance purchased the property and opened the world’s largest Bass Pro Shop.
